It’s a question I’m often asked. Why do some authors prefer to write racy thriller novels, while others like myself prefer to write sweet and wholesome romance novels? And I guess it comes down to what we are comfortable penning as authors. After all, if we are not comfortable writing explicit sex scenes or lurid gunfights, then the message is simple. Stick to what you enjoy writing and for me, it is the romance genre and in particular in the first person which is growing in popularity. The first-person POV allows me to explore the inner thoughts and emotions of my characters, to allow them to speak from the heart and for the reader to experience what they are feeling much more directly. Internal thoughts and self-awareness are key aspects of all my characters and I hope in writing both in the first person and also with considered and thoughtful introspection, this creates more rounded characters in my clean romance novels.
The latest of these which is due for release in January is Finding Our Forever, and as you would expect from the title it is a journey for the two main characters, Beau Sawyer and Dana Lewis. It is not just a physical journey, but one of self-discovery, and as always there is the character arc where you as the reader travel with them on this journey. The setting for Finding our Forever is very different from my Bluff Bay series which is set on the East Coast. Here we have moved to the rolling pastures and expansive landscapes of Texas, in a small farming community outside Austin where there is a strong theme of ranching which runs through the book. Horses too feature strongly and along with our hero and heroine, we meet Little Joe, a sinewy black stallion, Jimmy a cheeky new ranchhand, and Suzette, the town gossip. And tying the story together is Avery, the 7-year-old daughter of Beau and Vivian who they both love despite their bitter divorce. These are the characters and novels which are my passion and I hope yours too. Sweet romance is what I love and for me will always be the genre I write.
